The institute was established in 1995 in co-operation with Petz Aladár County Hospital, which is the teaching hospital for Semmelweis University of Budapest, and thus has a faculty status. In the academic year of 1996/97, the institution started baccalaureate nursing and social work training programmes in the form of full-time and distance learning. It runs post-graduate mental hygiene and health promotion training programs, and provides a high level of professional training in nursing and midwifery.

The department is responsible for directing the education of social workers, teaching the subjects of social work studies, social policy and social work and training in laboratories. It organises and co-ordinates field practice. The department also takes part in nursing and mental hygiene programmes, and offers elective subjects for students of other faculties. The staff organises postgraduate courses for social workers.
