fThe faculty was founded by the Faculty of Law of Eötvös Loránd University of Sciences in Budapest (ELTE) and Széchenyi István College on 25th June 1995 in Gyõr.
The objective of the institute was to educate students and post-graduates in law and political science at Széchenyi István College in Gyõr according to professional standards and under the professional supervision of the Law Faculty of ELTE. The independent legal status of the faculty was defined in the following statute:
The faculty is an independent branch of the Faculty of Law of ELTE in all educational matters. The faculty has the status of an independent faculty at Széchenyi István College and is incorporated into the university’s administrational and financial structure.
According to the Organisational and Operational Rules (OOR) the founders have assigned the managerial and leadership tasks, including the organisation of the educational programs and business administration to the Dean of the faculty and the Board of the Faculty.
The students who were admitted to the Faculty until 2001 approximately 130 students yearly, were under the academic supervision of, and their diplomas were granted by the ELTE Faculty of Law.
On 1st January 2002 Széchenyi István College became a fully accredited state university with a new name, Széchenyi István University, and within the university the Faculty of Law and Economics was established. The faculty incorporates two institutes the Institute of Law and Political Science and the Institute of Economics.
The teaching of law started at the institute in September 1995 and the first law graduates received their diplomas in 2000. 2002/2003 will be the first academic year in which the University admits law students on its own right. Until this time the institute educated students both under the supervision of ELTE and taught its own curriculum for students admitted after September 2002.
On 1st of January 2007 the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences was established.
With the continuous development of its internal structure and teaching staff the Faculty is capable of meeting the growing academic and teaching challenges.
